Everything You Need to Know About Wireless Dongles

Learn how wireless CarPlay and Android Auto adapters work, and find out if they're right for your vehicle.

What Are Wireless Dongles?

Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto dongles are small electronic devices that convert your car's existing wired smartphone integration into a wireless connection.

Instead of plugging your phone into a USB cable every time you get in your car, a wireless dongle lets you keep your phone in your pocket or bag while still enjoying all the features of CarPlay or Android Auto.

How Do They Work?

1

Plug into USB

The dongle connects to your car's USB port—the same one you'd normally use to plug in your phone.

2

Pair via Bluetooth

Your phone pairs with the dongle using Bluetooth, establishing the initial connection.

3

Connect via WiFi

The dongle creates a direct WiFi connection to your phone for high-speed data transfer.

4

Enjoy Wireless

Your car now thinks your phone is plugged in, but it's actually connected wirelessly!

Critical Requirements

Your Vehicle MUST Already Have:

  • Factory-installed wired CarPlay or Android Auto — Dongles convert wired to wireless; they cannot add these features to vehicles that don't have them.
  • A data-capable USB port — Some vehicles have USB ports that only provide power for charging, not data transfer.

Will Work If...

  • • Your car has wired CarPlay/AA from the factory
  • • You have an aftermarket head unit with wired CarPlay/AA
  • • Your phone meets the minimum OS requirements

Won't Work If...

  • • Your car lacks any CarPlay/AA capability
  • • You only have basic Bluetooth audio
  • • Your infotainment is proprietary without CarPlay/AA support

No Factory CarPlay? Here Are Your Options

1. Aftermarket Head Unit

Replace your factory radio with an aftermarket unit from brands like Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony, or Alpine. Many of these support CarPlay and Android Auto out of the box.

Cost: $300-$1,500+ including installation

2. Check Higher Trim Levels

Some vehicle trims come with CarPlay/Android Auto standard while base models don't. If you're shopping for a used vehicle, consider looking at higher trims.

3. Phone Mount + Bluetooth Audio

While not as integrated, a quality phone mount and Bluetooth audio connection can provide similar functionality for navigation and music.
